Regulating short term vacation rentals in Athens

The ACC Government Operations Committee has passed a recommendation to regulate Short Term Vacation Rentals (i.e. Air Bnb, VRBO) in Athens, Georgia including barring full-time STVRs in single-family neighborhoods. The vote at the November 21 meeting was unanimous and the recommendation will now go to the full Mayor & Commission for a vote at a December 13 Special Called Session.

Athens community fights against displacement caused by actions of Prosperity Capital Partners & Strategic Management Partners

Prosperity Capital Partners, an investment company out of Florida, purchased hundreds of working-class housing units in Athens, Georgia and recently displaced many of the tenants due to drastic rent increases & policy changes. Residents from the effected properties (Lexington Heights, Garnett Ridge, Hidden Pines, and Highland Park) have written a letter to PCP, and their management company Strategic Management Partners, with a list of demands to ensure residents retain dignity and fair engagement with their housing situation.

Athens Eviction Prevention Program Passes

Commission passes Athens Eviction Prevention Program!

The Athens-Clarke County Mayor & Commission passed an ordinance initiating the Athens Eviction Prevention Program. This program will help Athens residents facing eviction stay in their homes by negotiating and paying settlements to landlords. The program is slated to begin in January 2022.

Resources for Tenants & Landlords – COVID-19

On March 31, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor & Commission unanimously passed a resolution drafted by Commissioners Mariah Parker & Tim Denson focused on rent & mortgage relief for Athens residents. This resolution urges landlords and banks to work with renters and homeowners who are having difficulty making payments [see resources for tenants & landlords/property owners at bottom].
