District 5 Commissioner Tim Denson is hosting the next (virtual) District 5 townhall on September 25 at 5:30pm. The September townhall will be on the the recently adopted Non-Discrimination Ordinance. We will discuss how this NDO works and how people can make complaints if they are the victim of discrimination.

It is important for the Unified Government to ensure that all persons within Athens-Clarke County have equal access to employment, housing, and public accommodations. The Mayor & Commission will consider adopting a Non-Discrimination Ordinance at the August 3 voting session (it will be discussed at the July 20 Agenda-setting meeting) to make these forms of discrimination illegal.

It recently came to light that the Clarke County Sheriff’s Department is complying with ICE Detainers (sometimes called ICE Holds) and assisting ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) to deport undocumented residents that are brought into the Clarke County Jail. The Human Rights Campaign has released their 2017 Municipal Equality Index scores. Athens-Clarke County scored only 33 points out of 100. The national average is 57.
